FAQ

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialty in dentistry that focuses on correcting dental and facial irregularities. An orthodontist uses special techniques to fix problems like crooked teeth, space between the teeth, overbites and underbites. An orthodontist's ultimate goal for any patient is to create a beautiful and attractive smile.

At what age should I start thinking about braces?

The American Board of Orthodontics recommends starting orthodontic screening as early as the age of 7. Since the mouth is still developing at that age, many potential problems can be detected and prevented by beginning treatment.

How long do people usually have to wear braces?

Treatment time varies with each case, but normally lasts 12-24 months with proper care and patient compliance.

Do we offer the "invisible" braces?"

Yes! They are called 'Invisalign' and we are certified to use this system in our office. These removable clear aligners are an alternative to braces for adults. But not every case is right for Invisalign. Dr. Lane will be able to tell you if it is right for you at your first visit.

Can I still play sports with braces?

Although there is risk, braces do not usually get in the way of active sports. We do provide mouthguards to reduce the risk even further.

Do braces hurt?

No, but they can be uncomfortable. Since braces straighten your teeth by forcing them to move, they can make your teeth sore for a few days after you first get them and after your appointments. We also provide wax to help keep them from rubbing against your mouth.

Can I 'personalize' my braces?

Yes! We offer several options to choose from. We have silver, gold and clear braces, as well as a spectrum of colors for ties (rubber bands that go on the braces). You can change the tie color each month to match a holiday, the season or your mood. When you get your braces off, we can make retainers in several colors and styles. We are always trying to make braces as fun as possible!
